A letter from one newly-baptized

March 24, 2008

Magdi Allam, baptized by Pope Benedict at the Easter Vigil, movingly recounts the path of his conversion from Islam to Christian faith in a letter published by Zenit.

Read it all.

Welcome to the household of God, Magdi Christiano, our brother in Christ. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood.

‘Upon the Circumcision’

January 1, 2008

The Circumcision (Rembrandt van Rijn, 1661)

YE flaming Powers, and winged Warriours bright,
That erst with Musick, and triumphant song
First heard by happy watchful Shepherds ear,
So sweetly sung your Joy the Clouds along
Through the soft silence of the list’ning night;
Now mourn, and if sad share with us to bear
Your fiery essence can distill no tear,
Burn in your sighs, and borrow
Seas wept from our deep sorrow,
He who with all Heav’ns heraldry whileare
Enter’d the world, now bleeds to give us ease;
Alas, how soon our sin
Sore doth begin
His Infancy to sease!

O more exceeding love or law more just?
Just law indeed, but more exceeding love!
For we by rightfull doom remediles
Were lost in death, till he that dwelt above
High thron’d in secret bliss, for us frail dust
Emptied his glory, ev’n to nakednes;
And that great Cov’nant which we still transgress
Intirely satisfi’d,
And the full wrath beside
Of vengeful Justice bore for our excess,
And seals obedience first with wounding smart
This day, but O ere long
Huge pangs and strong
Will pierce more neer his heart.

About The Confessing Reader

December 4, 2007

Those readers new to the weblog may learn something about its author and host by using the hypertext link “About”, at the top of the column to the right.

My apologies to those three readers who went there earlier today, only to find some generic WordPress statement.  There is actually information about your humble scribe there now.

CANNet webloggers afield

December 3, 2007

I suspect that most readers are already aware of the changes in URL addresses due to the recent loss of the Classical Anglican network (temporary only, we hope!).  If not, I have provided links in the column to the right to several of the CANNet weblogs:  Drell’s Descants, Rather Not Blog, Lent & Beyond, and Surrounded (the weblog for news in the Diocese of San Joaquin).

Backup weblog created

November 29, 2007

Due to unlooked-for server problems at CANNet, a number of weblogs are at least temporarily out of commission.

For now, the Confessing Reader will live at this new WordPress site.  Time will tell whether this will be a permanent relocation.
